This quote by former President Bill Clinton really hasn’t aged well — at least within his own political party.
What we see here is nothing controversial. In fact, it’s just a simple acknowledgment of existing federal law as it was written then and still written now.
But — imagine if a Democrat was caught uttering these words today. Do you think this person would be able to win an election, or even get through a primary? Probably not.
The truth is that politicians (and America as a whole) was once far more united on the issue of illegal immigration. The understanding was that illegal immigration was, well, illegal — and particularly unfair (and frankly insulting) to the immigrants who follow our laws in the hopes of becoming American citizens. This latter group is in many was far more patriotic than many of the people born in this country.
The quote referenced here should be a rallying cry for unity and justice under the law. Instead, it’s become just as divisive as a Confederate flag or a Black Lives Matter protest.
