“We’re not socialists! We just want capitalism to be more fair.”
We’re definitely paraphrasing here, but this is essentially what you used to hear from your everyday Democratic voter and politician alike. Today, this argument is harder than ever for the left to make as the Democratic Party reveals itself to be an actual socialist party.
Not long ago, socialists (we’re including so-called “democratic socialists” here) were considered to be on the very fringe of the Democratic left. People like Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden were considered left-of-center, and were the thought leaders of the Democratic Party for a very long time. In the modern age, that honor is now given to the likes of Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and now New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
For these politicians, capitalism isn’t a net good with some problems to be addressed. Instead, the system that has lifted millions of people around the world out of poverty is an inherent evil, and the only way to correct it is to scrap the market economy wholesale.
Socialism is mainstream within the Democratic Party establishment as well as the left-wing academic class that supports it. Hopefully, the economic system’s horrible track record will convince enough Americans to reject its false promises.
