Ah…the Bush years. They weren’t that long ago, but the mainstream media’s attitude toward the Bush Administration was in many ways a preview for how they would react to the Trump Administration.
To be sure, there are a ton of differences between these two administrations, despite them both representing the same political party. Under President George W. Bush, nation building was celebrated as America’s responsibility as a global superpower. Under President Donald Trump, it is usually considered a waste of time. The biggest difference, however, is how each president has interacted with U.S. intelligence agencies.
Bush appeared to trust these entities entirely. Their reports that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein did in fact have access to weapons of mass destruction and had plans to use them were the very justification used to invade his country. The mainstream media slammed the president for putting such blind faith in these agencies.
Trump, by contrast, is often at odds with these intelligence agencies — many of whom repeat the mantra that nefarious Russian actors are the reason why he is in office. Weirdly enough, the mainstream media currently slams Trump for taking their assessments with a grain of salt.
So, which is it media? Are intelligence agencies the supreme authority on the truth, or are they perhaps just as corruptible as any government entity? It cannot be both.
