On the surface, socialist philosopher Karl Marx and holiday icon and childhood hero Santa Claus actually have quite a bit in common. They both have thick white beards, they’re obsessed with the color red, and they like the idea of giving things away for free at the expense of someone else’s hard labor.
There’s one critical difference, however — Karl Marx doesn’t have a naughty list, because everyone is going to starve to death eventually. Say what you want about the man — he does not discriminate when it comes to deciding who is going to get killed.
Of course, Santa Claus is fake, and belief in his message hasn’t led to the death of over 100 million people in a single century. The same cannot be said for followers of Marx. Communist governments have either seen population levels drop indirectly because their economic models fail to provide for them, or directly because they were forced to murder dissidents who don’t like starving to death.
At the end of the day, it’s probably best to just stick with Santa.
