Handling Loss: Democrats Vs. Republicans

Losing is never fun for anyone, and that’s especially true for political campaigns. Not only do electoral defeats call your own views into question, they can also mean generous financial contributions and volunteer work meant nothing.

But, let’s not kid ourselves — not everyone deals with loss the same way, and the past decade of American politics has made that painfully clear.

This meme suggests that conservative Americans radically changed their tone based on who the president was. While they resisted President Obama at every opportunity, they are shown here condemning everyone else for not sufficiently supporting President Trump.

Or, at least that’s what the content creator wants you to remember. Let’s take a quick walk through memory lane and recall what actually happened.

President Obama was a fairly unpopular president with conservatives straight from the start. Predictably, this unpopularity led to nation-wide demonstrations and the organization of the Tea Party movement. This new political force was largely peaceful in its implementation, and greatly contributed to Republican electoral victories in the House, Senate, governorships, and eventually the presidency itself.

That is how the American right handled loss — by winning.

Liberals, on the other hand, haven’t shown the same grace. Instead of peacefully organizing as conservatives did almost a decade ago, they have green-lit radical groups like Antifa and Black Lives Matter to disrupt conservative speaking events, throw rocks at police, and demonize half the country with violent rhetoric.

This is a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.
