These memes made their rounds across social media platforms years ago, but have enjoyed steady popularity since new trends took over.
This “Be Like Denmark” routine was especially popular in the United States during the presidential campaign of self-described socialist Bernie Sanders, a senator from Vermont.
Of course, Sanders’ so-called “political revolution” was ultimately defeated by the Clinton political machine, but the progressive candidate did succeed in convincing millions of American millennials that the ideology responsible for the deaths of almost 100 million people in the past century was somehow just misunderstood.
The selling point for Denmark, which has actually scaled back its welfarist policies in recent years, is what the government can give you — rather than what you can give yourself.
Let’s also remember that, while things like college and healthcare are taken care of, citizens of Denmark are also forced to pay over 60 percent of their income back to the government, and are sorely overcharged for utilities like gasoline.
