British Police Block Child Alfie Evans from Leaving the Country

If you’re an American and you’re still wondering what a truly loving and caring European government would look like, here’s a fresh example.

Alfie Evans is a two-year-old who was effectively sentenced to die by his government in the United Kingdom. Stricken with a debilitating illness government doctors have deemed to be terminal, Alfie’s parents sought to instead take their child to Italy in the hopes they would have another chance to save his life.

And that’s where the British government stepped in.

Instead of simply allowing the parents to take a plane to another part of Europe for potentially life-saving treatment, the British government barred the child from being able to leave the hospital. As a sign of good faith, the Italian government even granted Alfie honorary citizenship in hopes it would help the family overcome any potential legal obstacles. But, the British government stood firm.

Americans watching this situation unfold are rightfully terrified. The British healthcare system has literally sentenced a child to die because it was unable to take care of him.

This just underscores an old truth: a government with the power to give you everything you want also has the power to take away everything you have.
